The Human Technopole Foundation is looking for an Associate Head of the Cryo-electron Microscopy Facility for the Structural Biology Research Centre, to support electron tomography, correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM), DualBeam cryo-FIB and single-particle EM workflows.

The Associate Head will work in close collaboration with the Head of the Cryo-EM Facility and will be responsible for maintaining a facility capable of state-of-the-art electron tomography and CLEM, supporting internal and external users and mentoring junior facility staff.

She/He will work with other HT Core Facilities and IT Services to create an optimal research support system.

She/He can participate in and manage research projects whose purpose is to advance the facility.

The Cryo-EM Facility at Human Technopole benefits from state-of-the-art equipment, providing an outstanding platform for both single-particle EM and electron tomography workflows.

The Facility will be equipped, by December 2020/January 2021, with two 300kV TEMs (TFS Titan Krios G4 + Falcon 4 + Gatan K3 + Gatan BioQuantum EF + VPP, and a 300 kV microscope dedicated to room temperature electron tomography), 200kV TEM (TFS Glacios + Falcon 4 + VPP), 120kV TEM (TFS Talos L120C), a DualBeam cryo-FIB system (TFS Aquilos), and at least one fluorescence microscope with a cryo-stage for CLEM applications.

Ancillary equipment includes plunge freezing devices, glow discharger units, plasma cleaner, carbon coating system, and other sample preparation tools for high-pressure freezing, freeze substitution and ultramicrotomy of resin embedded and vitrified samples.

Computing resources for EM-related analysis will also be available.

Key tasks and responsibilities

The Associate Head of the Cryo-EM facility will:

  • be responsible for resource planning and maintenance of the Cryo-EM Facility;
  • introduce and supervise facility users to EM sample preparation, technical equipment operation (i.e. from specimen handling to data collection) and provide evaluation support;
  • interact with the manufacturers and field service engineers of the microscopes and EM ancillary equipment;
  • actively participate in facility reviews by external experts;
  • actively participate in the overall development of HT core facilities;
  • help in designing IT services to meet EM requirements;
  • build effective links and collaborations within HT;
  • develop and promote networks with other national and international EM facilities;
  • support raising third-party funding where possible.

Requirements

  • +5 years of hands-on experience in the use of electron tomography DualBeam cryo-FIB system, CLEM (experience with all these techniques or a combination of two of them is an advantage), or SPA;
  • Previous experience in technical support role in an EM Core Facility open to internal and external users;
  • Fluency in English – HT is an international research institute;
  • Proven communication, team building and problem solving skills.
