The International Security Programme (ISP) at Chatham House has a long-established reputation for high quality and policy relevant insights and analysis on a range of security and defence issues. The Programme is seen as a world leader on cyber and Internet policy, nuclear security, space policy, and disarmament issues amongst other areas.

The role

We are seeking a part-time Research Analyst to join our diverse team for a fixed-term maternity cover. The role holder will support the execution of our research projects on biological and nuclear weapons policy and emerging technologies portfolio (such as cyber, space, quantum technologies). Working closely with Deputy Director, you will execute projects on the impact of emerging technologies on international security, capability and capacity to detect and respond to bio-threats and complex systems modelling in the nuclear field.

Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct research, including field work and interviews as part of executing projects;
  • Provide editorial support for project related publications and copy-edit drafts of manuscripts.
  • Participate in the design and management of research projects; including drafting concept notes, project budgeting and writing interim and final reports for donors.
  • Be actively involved in research project fundraising.
  • Write and publish research papers, expert comments, and policy briefs.
  • Participate, assist and coordinate roundtable meetings and other research events in consultation with the line manager,
  • Willing to be flexible, as and when required.
  • Assist in coordinating attendance, travel, accommodation and other logistics for project-related events.

Requirements

Essential Skills and Experience

You will have/are:

  • A proven record of policy-relevant research on one or more of the following international security issues: nuclear weapons policy, space policy, quantum technologies, biological threats, NATO defence and security policy; cybersecurity of critical national infrastructure, and other emerging technology areas;
  • A self-starter and the ability to work independently;
  • A track-record of short-form and/or long-form research publications;
  • Experience of working in a policy-relevant setting;
  • Proven experience and knowledge in nuclear weapons policy and/or emerging technologies;
  • Are dedicated and enthusiastic in your professional approach;
  • Able to build relationships with our diverse network of colleagues, engage with the media and comfortable with public speaking;
  • A good communicator and can adapt your verbal and written skills to different audiences;
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people;
  • Are proficient in English;
  • Excellent qualitative and analytical skills;
  • Excellent organisational skills, detail orientated and be able to make effective decisions under time pressure whilst balancing various tasks.

Desirable

You have:

  • Proven project design skills;
  • Collaboratively led or participated in research projects;
  • Run or supported multiple research projects simultaneously;
  • An understanding of the work of international organisations, such as the UN, NATO etc;
  • Knowledge of organising and running events, budgeting and publication outputs.

Salary: £28,000 - £33,00 (FTE) depending upon experience (pro-rata)
 

Contract: Part-time (2.5 days or 3 days per week), 12 month fixed-term.
