Our Middle East and North Africa Programme focuses on the latest political, economic and security developments in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen, as well as trends in the Gulf states, Iran, and North Africa.
 

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate to join the team on a two-year fixed term contract. The successful candidate will be committed to the programme's research on Iraq. A key focus of the role is to support research into governance, political economy, and accountability in Iraq using mixed method approaches.

Key responsibilities:

Through your intellectual curiosity, creativity and passion for our mission, you will bring meaningful experience to the team through research. This is an exciting chance to create an impact at a world-leading think-tank! You will provide efficient, comprehensive and proactive research on political economy and governance in Iraq and as part of the Iraq Initiative more broadly. You will:

  • Support research into governance, political economy, and accountability in Iraq using mixed method approaches such as literature reviews, qualitative and quantitative research, and primary and secondary data analysis.
  • Support the development of Iraq articles, research papers, meeting summaries and policy briefs.
  • Act as a rapporteur for project meetings and events and transcribe project interviews.
  • Summarise and translate key documents, news articles and other Iraq events remotely.
  • Support the project manager in conducting the logistical arrangements for Iraq-based activities and participate in them where relevant.

Requirements

Skills & Experience

  • Proven research expertise on Iraq, specifically political economy, state-building or civil society
  • Strong experience of data and statistical analysis, and handling large datasets as well as strong qualitative analytical skills
  • Good experience in carrying out literature reviews and proven knowledge of research theory, methods and practice
  • Demonstrable experience of policy research through a range of publications
  • Ability to conduct above key responsibilities fluently in Arabic and English
  • Detail orientated and able to work under tight deadlines whilst balancing various tasks
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships both internally and externally

Salary: £34,000

Contract: Full time (35 hours per week), 2 year fixed-term contract.
