About the role

The Director of the CEO’s office is a senior role in the CEO office, working directly with the Chief Executive, Laurence Tubiana, to advise on and manage her external representational role, with a particular attention to high-level political engagement in France, key European countries and the international community. The Director is a key political advisor to the CEO and will define and execute a complex and multi-stakeholder strategy for the CEO’s priorities. The Director is responsible for sharing information on the CEO’s external priorities and activities with ECF colleagues and working with the Chief of Staff to ensure execution of these political priorities.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with CEO and Chief of Staff to set CEO’s strategic priorities and execute through a broad range of stakeholders. Track CEO’s activities against strategic plan;
  • Constantly engage with internal staff and external partners to track political priorities and policy issues, and incorporate into CEO’s strategic plan accordingly;
  • Plan and advise on the best use of the CEO's time, in collaboration with the Chief of Staff and Executive Assistant;
  • Ensure preparation and follow-up of the CEO’s meetings, including producing briefing materials;
  • Travel with and staff the CEO;
  • Responsible for disseminating information about CEO’s external priorities and activities across the ECF;
  • Create and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, including the ECF board and CEO’s high-level political contacts;
  • Participate on the CEO’s behalf as necessary at external meetings;
  • Oversee preparation or directly prepare communications from the CEO and op-eds, speeches, or other pieces of writing;
  • Launch and oversee CEO’s special projects as needed;
  • Manage and coach the CEO’s office team, including working with team members to design consistent strategic plans for the CEO’s work and time;
  • Create a positive and pro-active working environment for members of the CEO’s office.

Experience and competencies

  • University degree;
  • 8+ years of experience;
  • Fluent in English, French preferred;
  • Ability to communicate and connect easily; and to deal with complex, ambiguous, and fast-changing situations;
  • Proven track record of working with tact, diplomacy, confidentiality and discretion;
  • Have credibility and existing relationships with high-level actors;
  • Keen understanding of climate and broader geopolitical landscape, and ability to adapt and translate the CEO’s strategy accordingly;
  • Proven ability to bring people at all levels together and get things done regardless of level;
  • Ability to write and edit speeches and other written materials at short notice and to the highest standard;
  • Previous experience in and knowledge of philanthropic organisations and in climate change, diplomacy and sustainable development;
  • Excellent project management, administrative skills and computer skills (Outlook, Microsoft, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • Great flexibility in working hours;
  • A sincere interest in the mission and values of ECF.
