The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for its General Secretariat Directorate (SG) - Corporate Responsibility Department (CR) - Civil Society Division (CS)at its headquarters in Luxembourg, an (Associate) Civil Society Officer. This is a full time position at grade 4/5.

The term of this contract will be 4 years.

Panel interviews are anticipated from end of June.

The EIB offers fixed-term contracts of up to a maximum of 6 years, according to business needs, with a possibility to convert to a permanent contract, subject to organisational requirements and individual performance.

Purpose

As part of the Corporate Responsibility (CR) department, and in particular the team responsible to manage EIB stakeholder relations, the Civil Society Officer will contribute to further widen and deepen the Bank’s activities and engagement in a number of sustainability issues, within the strategy of pursuing best practices and continuous improvement.  The area of engagement focuses on environmental, social and governance issues at large.  It covers the sustainability dimension of the organization as the key subject matter of engagement. 

Operating Network

The (Associate) Civil Society Officer, internally referred to as (Associate) Officer, reports to the Head of the Division and will liaise with the officers in the division and in the department. You will work in frequent and close contact with business associations, federations, think tanks, academia, NGOs, networks and wider civil society stakeholders. Internally, you will work in close relation with other Directorates (Public Affairs Brussels Office, OPs, PJ, JU, Complaints Mechanism etc.).

Accountabilities

  • Contributes to the management and development of a constructive relation with stakeholders, wider civil society on sustainability matters.
  • Contributes to the Bank`s corporate responsibility, in terms of measuring, auditing, and reporting on corporate responsibility/sustainability.
  • Initiates and implements activities that further the corporate responsibility of the organization, strengthen its reputation.
  • Coordinates and manages requests for information from NGOs and other CSOs as well as from external stakeholders.
  • Liaises with other Directorates in order to defend the Bank's interests and values when dealing with stakeholders, the wider Civil Society.
  • Furthers the Banks engagement in environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, with related, specialized stakeholders.
  • Engages with stakeholders in ESG matters, in close coordination with related directorates and in tandem with dedicated members in the division.
  • In charge of the dialogue with specialized organisations for the assigned area activities (mainly NGOs, think tanks, also networks or federations).
  • Formulates strategic recommendations in his/her area of responsibility.
  • Follows-up and reports on latest developments in corporate responsibility and sustainable development regulations and standards, reporting, measurement and disclosure issues.

Qualifications

  • University degree, preferably in environmental and/or social sciences, development economics, human sciences, possibly in economics, public or international relations.
  • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Very good understanding of corporate responsibility, and the EU Sustainable Finance Framework.
  • Good knowledge of related frameworks, such as EMAS, GRI, SASB, TCFD.
  • Applied experience in sustainability, including reporting in a corporate and/or banking/asset management.
  • Very good understanding of the civil society/not for profit sector.
  • Direct experience of sustainability issues and best practice in measuring, reporting.
  • Understanding of, experience in ESG in finance.
  • Knowledge of key actors within the sustainability and corporate responsibility landscape.
  • Very good knowledge of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainable Development Issues.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and a good command of French (*). Knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage.

(*) There may be certain flexibility on this requirement, but limited to particularly suitable candidates who may not yet be proficient in French. If selected, such candidates will be hired on the condition that they build up rapidly knowledge of French and accept that their future career in the EIB may be subject to the attainment of sufficient proficiency in both of the Bank's working languages.
