Purpose

The EIB Group is the Bank of the European Union and the world’s largest multilateral bank. The visibility of its impact and relevance to European citizens and people everywhere has been steadily growing. The EIB Group’s communication department manages the Bank’s external and internal communications, relying on a team based in Luxembourg and in key capitals and hubs around the EU and beyond. In line with its policy of placing stronger emphasis on communication to an EU audience in Brussels and closer cooperation with fellow EU institutions, the Brussels-based Senior Media Officer plays a key role in the implementation of the EIB’s Communication Strategy. You will carry out corporate communications activities aimed at external audiences, strengthening the EIB’s presence and profile, and ensure that the key messages of the EIB Group are coherently reflected in the national and international media.

We are looking for a passionate, respected, well-connected, pro-active, and new media-savvy individual, committed to Europe and the EIB’s values and mission, capable of liaising with external audiences, EU partners and internal stakeholders at all levels. Ability to be a good team player, a keenness to working with others and capability to interact positively with the rest of the communication department and Bank colleagues is crucial to the success in this role.

The (Senior) Media Officer, internally referred to as (Senior) Officer Corporate Communication, will be based in Brussels and will have frequent mission travel in the region of his responsibility, and to the headquarters in Luxembourg.

Operating Network

You will report to the Head of the Media Division and work in close cooperation with internal contacts. These will include members of the Management Committee and their advisors, staff from Operations and Projects, colleagues in the Communication department, colleagues in the Brussels office and all the Bank’s directorates involved in relevant projects or issues.

In addition, you will extensively liaise and collaborate with external contacts such as journalists, staff of EU institutions, think-tanks and lobby groups, communication agencies tasked to work on EIB subjects, opinion formers and influencers.

Accountabilities

  • Engage in and initiate communication activities for the EIB Group, conveying the key messages of the Group to journalists, influencers and stakeholders in Brussels and internationally.
  • Develop and inform EU and international communication strategies and supervise communication agencies working for the EIB.
  • Build and extend a contact network and engage with media and influencers in Brussels to increase the visibility of the EIB Group in the “EU bubble”.
  • Organise events and press conferences in Brussels and produce press material for these activities, cooperating closely with EU institutions and other stakeholders.
  • Prepare briefings for EIB Group leadership visiting Brussels.
  • Contribute to the communication of EIB Group mandates and coordinate outreach on EU mandates with the communication teams of the European Commission and its directorates.
  • Develop creative ideas for multimedia content and social media activities to increase the reach of communication.
  • Work closely with the Director of Communications and the Head of Media Division as well as other colleagues in the department and experts in other parts of the EIB Group, keeping them informed about important developments in Brussels.
  • Cooperate closely with public affairs colleagues in the EIB Brussels office, align messaging and jointly develop and implement outreach strategies.
  • Propose and draft content for audiences in Brussels, working closely with colleagues across the COM department and beyond.
  • Identify individuals and organisations to cooperate with in communication and include in a network of EIB ambassadors amplifying the key messages of the EIB Group.

Qualifications

  • University degree, preferably oriented towards communication, public relations, political sciences, or economics
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional work experience with a focus on strategic communications, media and /or public relations
  • A very good understanding of the EU institutional and policy framework as well as current economic and political debates in Brussels
  • A well-developed network in the Brussels institutional, media and influencer landscape
  • Excellent skills in communicating with different public audiences and knowledge of channels to reach our audiences
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in audio-visual and social media
  • Proficiency with common software such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrable understanding of EU economy and of the banking sector
  • Understanding of the EIB’s mission and its activities
  • Experience in dealing with sensitive issues
  • Availability to travel
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and/or French (*). Fluency in German would be a distinct advantage.

(*) There may be certain flexibility on this requirement, but limited to particularly suitable candidates who may not yet be proficient in French. If selected, such candidates will be hired on the condition that they build up rapidly knowledge of French and accept that their future career in the EIB may be subject to the attainment of sufficient proficiency in both of the Bank's working languages
