About this role

ONE has a network of Global Activists – in Africa, Europe and North America – fighting against extreme poverty and preventable diseases. In Europe, the ONE Youth Ambassador programme is a one-year volunteer programme which is entering its ninth year in Belgium and we’re looking for passionate activists to join us for 2022. Next year will be really important in the fight against extreme poverty and preventable diseases. We need you to join us to make sure everyone, everywhere gets vaccines for COVID-19, countries can recover from the pandemic's aftershocks, we continue to battle against climate change and decision makers hear loudly what they must do more to solve the global problems we all face. Do you also think that more needs to be done for global justice? Then join us to make sure decision-makers turn their promises into action!

Youth Ambassadors are advocates for The ONE Campaign in their communities and beyond. They carry out a variety of creative and innovative actions in support of our campaigning and advocacy work. In total, there will be around 300 Youth Ambassadors throughout Europe, joining hundreds more who are part of our Global Activists network.

The volunteer programme will run throughout 2022, and each Ambassador will receive training, access to high-profile events, in-depth policy briefings, as well as dedicated support from ONE’s campaigns team. For now, part of the training, briefings and big events will be likely done online. Depending on how the COVID-19 situation develops, we will gradually go back to in-person meetings and events. This role is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to become more engaged in international development or who wants to develop their skills in inspiring change.

Being a ONE Youth Ambassador is not a full-time or paid role. It is a voluntary role that will take no more than a few hours of your time every week. Youth Ambassadors are typically between 16-30 years of age. There will be a launch event, opportunities to meet other European Youth Ambassadors, and an end of year celebration which you are encouraged to attend. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic part of our upcoming activities could take place online. The potential for any in-person activity in 2022 will be regularly assessed against government guidelines, as they are updated.

Typical tasks

Youth Ambassadors will have access to a range of campaign and advocacy tools and activities and will receive support to design and develop their own action plans with the ONE team. They will be expected to deliver a range of actions, including but not limited to:

  • Online and in-person meetings with decision-makers and advocating to members of the European Parliament, European Commissioners and other influential figures on ONE’s 2022 campaigns
  • Attending online and offline events including trainings, conferences and debates
  • Using social media to raise awareness and inspire change
  • Coordinating and delivering local events & presentations where appropriate and possible
  • Writing letters to newspapers and possibly appearing on the radio or TV
  • Encouraging the public to take online and in-person campaign actions

What we are looking for

  • A passion for our mission to end extreme poverty and an interest in international issues
  • Attendance at a programme induction and training, likely to be online around January/February 2022
  • Willingness to attend monthly meetings (online and/or offline, depending on the COVID-19 situation) and participate in social media actions
  • Great communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships
  • Ability to encourage and support others
  • Ability to develop strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise own workload efficiently
  • Verbal and written proficiency in English

The language used in the programme is English. Priority in recruitment will be given to those living in Belgium for the duration of the programme.

What we offer

  • A clear set of objectives and tasks with a written summary of achievements awarded on completion of the programme
  • Regular online training in areas including campaigning, advocacy, and media
  • Practical skills and know-how to build public pressure and become catalysts of change
  • Being part of a group of 60 Youth Ambassadors and a Global Activists network of over 1,000 people (from Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, the United States, Canada, Italy, Belgium, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and France).
  • The opportunity to attend exciting events (for the time being mostly online)
  • Opportunities to engage with policy-makers
  • Reimbursement of reasonable expenses when on duty once offline activities resume

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for the role without regard to race, colour, religion, sex, national origin, political affiliation, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, disability, genetic information, age, or other legally protected characteristics.

Due to the number of inquiries that ONE receives, we thank all candidates for their interest yet only those who are selected for an interview will be contacted.
