We are looking for a full time “Policy Officer, climate and land use” to be based in our WWF European Policy Office (WWF EPO) in Brussels.

The European Policy Office helps shape EU policies that impact on the European and global environment. WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature.

Main responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading WWF’s EU advocacy on climate-related land use policy issues, including bioenergy, the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF), the EU’s Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) Regulation and other EU policies and initiatives that involve or relate to carbon emissions and removals in the land use sector, including their implementation by Member States.

This means analysing policy proposals, lobbying decision makers, briefing journalists and working closely with our EU and global network of national offices in order to ensure that:

  • EU and national bioenergy policies and plans, in particular those included in or based on the EU Renewable Energy Directive, reflect the best available science and therefore only incentivise types of bioenergy that deliver significant, near term emission reductions compared to fossil fuels;
  • The proposed CRCF doesn’t undermine rapid cuts in fossil fuel emissions and non-CO2 emissions in the agriculture sector, and supports positive outcomes for biodiversity;
  • That EU policies such as the Climate Law, the LULUCF Regulation, the Common Agricultural Policy and any future proposals drive a big increase in carbon dioxide removal by the EU land use sector, based on agriculture and forestry practices that are a win-win for both climate and biodiversity, and that such removals are not treated as equivalent to emissions.

What you need:

Required knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Strong analytical skills, including an ability to draw out key points from technical sources and identify the broader implications of different policy options;
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both in writing and orally (e.g. in meetings and presentations). An ability to listen attentively to the views of interlocutors, understand political priorities, and convey messages on complex subjects clearly and persuasively. Other languages an advantage;
  • Knowledge of the subject matter (see ‘objectives’, above). Relevant academic studies or qualifications an advantage;
  • At least 2 years’ professional experience, ideally including advocacy towards EU institutions and Member State governments and working with the EU legislative process;
  • An ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment, both independently and as a supportive team player;
  • A firm commitment to WWF’s mission (“to stop the degradation of the earth’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature”) and its values (“courage, integrity, respect, collaboration”).

Remuneration package:

WWF European Policy Office offers an indefinite contract with a competitive package of pay and other benefits. The indicative base salary for this role would be somewhere around €3,000 gross per month, with the precise figure depending on the skills and experience of the successful candidate. WWF European Policy Office also provides a range of additional benefits, including allowances for lunch, public transport and home working, health insurance, pension plan, paid holiday and additional month of pay in accordance with Belgian law.

Further details:

Please consult the attached job description for more information on the position. For any other questions on the role please contact the head of unit, Alex Mason (amason@wwf.eu).

How to apply?

Please send a single PDF document to recruitments@wwf.eu containing:

  1. An up to date CV;
  2. A covering email or letter of maximum 400 words setting out why you would be a good candidate for the role. Please also confirm that you have the legal right to work full time in Belgium and tell us when, if selected, you would be able to start.

Deadline for applications: midnight Brussels time on 12 November 2023.
