Do you have ideas on how to make aviation more sustainable? Are you interested in exploring ideas around clean fuels for aircraft, and new zero emission aircraft? Do you have an interest in understanding how the aviation sector works, and have a genuine passion for the environment? If you want to help explore these questions, and turn your ideas into reality, this may well be the job for you. Transport & Environment is looking for a sustainable aviation officer.

The role covers, among others, work on the ongoing and forthcoming EU and national regulations and industry initiatives. Whether based in Brussels or Berlin, you will join a large network of experts and campaigners working to make transport more sustainable.

About Us:

Transport & Environment (T&E) is Europe's leading clean transport campaign group. We combine the power of robust evidence and a deep understanding of the transport sector with compelling communications and impactful advocacy. With one of the lowest staff turnover rates in the NGO community, we are committed to the professional development of our colleagues and invest in training from your first day with the organisation. Our people work across Europe: colleagues in Brussels, Rome, Berlin, Madrid, Paris, Warsaw and London collaborate with our 63 member organisations and supporter groups to achieve our mission.

The role will involve:

  • Contributing to EU and German policy campaigns in Germany related to clean aviation, notably around new aircraft designs, fuels and aviation’s non-CO2 effects;
  • Identifying, commissioning and delivering impactful research tailored to the needs of the clean aviation campaign, at national and European level;
  • Establish relationships with regulators and industry, particularly in Germany, who are adopting measures and take concrete steps to reduce emissions from flying;
  • Contribute to T&E’s clean aviation advocacy work on key files including EU ETS, alternative fuels and national policies in Germany;
  • Lead T&E’s work in developing national alliances with industry, including manufacturers, and research organisations who are working to identify promising avenues to promote new fuels and aircraft;
  • Identify and work with partners outside of Europe, to expand our clean aviation work globally.

The successful candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • Two to five years of relevant experience in either the aviation sector or related decarbonisation sectors (i.e. hydrogen, renewable electricity), EU or national advocacy; knowledge of the German political system is strongly desired; in exceptional cases we can consider candidates with shorter or alternative work experience;
  • Excellent knowledge of engineering, aeronautics or physics acquired through education or relevant professional experience;
  • The ability and motivation to learn technical, economic and legal information, to independently develop new political, economic or legal arguments and evidence and use them to convince key stakeholders;
  • Good communication and presentation skills;
  • The confidence to think and act with initiative, to engage and influence policy-makers of different stripes, industry representatives and other stakeholders at the highest level;
  • Project management skills including strong interpersonal and team-working skills and an ability to deliver to tight deadlines; and
  • Excellent working knowledge of German and English.

T&E offers a one year contract with possibility of extension. This is a full time position, depending on candidate preference. A flexible working hours arrangement can be discussed.

To apply, please complete an application form and send a copy of your CV [compiled in a SINGLE document] to vacancy@transportenvironment.org clearly demonstrating how you meet the essential criteria. The email subject line should state: “Application for sustainable aviation officer”.

The closing date for applications is 30/05/2021. First Round interviews are scheduled to be held soon after the application deadline. The successful candidate will be expected to start as soon as possible.

T&E anticipates a high number of applications and only shortlisted candidates for the first round of interviews will be contacted.
