About the role

We are looking for a lawyer who has new ideas for how to use existing law to shift the behaviour of major players in the financial markets so that investment in carbon-intensive industry is reduced and transition plans in line with the Paris temperature goals are adopted.

With a strong insurance or financial services background, you will be making a key contribution to the work of our climate finance initiative. We use corporate and financial laws to drive greater integration and mitigation of climate-related financial risks into the management and investment decisions of influential actors in the financial sector. You can read more about our work here and here.

We aim to encourage a shift towards a cleaner, more sustainable, and resilient economic system that is well prepared for the risks of climate change, fully integrates environmental externalities and does not simply pass costs on to future generations.

In this role you will be responsible for developing the existing workstream which focuses on the insurance industry and more broadly working on climate finance initiatives in the European Union including in the policy arena. You will use your expertise in the legal, policy, and political terrain which governs the duties of insurers and other financial actors in the UK and EU in order to identify, develop, and implement legal interventions. This role involves a mix of developing and managing litigation and regulatory interventions, and participating in policy and advocacy work.

Your main duties will include:

  • Identifying opportunities and developing strategies for targeted legal intervention, litigation or regulatory complaints in relation to the insurance and financial services industries;
  • Preparing high-quality written work - for example, writing complaints to regulators and producing other work products designed to communicate our thinking to a wide variety of audiences;
  • Initiating and maintaining collaborative partnerships and working relationships with key partners;
  • Participating in formal and informal fora and groups, and representing ClientEarth's thinking and analysis in external fora.

See the job description on our website for the full list of duties for this role.

Role requirements

  • A law degree or equivalent (essential) and a relevant legal professional qualification in the UK or an EU Member State (desirable);
  • Significant relevant legal experience in private practice with a focus on financial markets and/or insurance;
  • A deep understanding of the formal and informal relationships, working practices etc. which pertain to financial markets, financial institutions and insurance;
  • A strong interest in the intersection of climate change risks and opportunities with financial markets and insurance;
  • Fluent in English (essential) and at least one other European language (strongly preferred).
