Finance Watch, the Brussels-based public interest advocacy association dedicated to making finance serve society, is looking for a Senior Research and Advocacy Officer to strengthen its team. Growing this team with highly skilled and motivated professionals is an essential component of our four-year strategic plan.
The Senior Research and Advocacy Officer will join the Research and Advocacy team of currently six members, comprising the Head, two Senior Officers, an Advocacy and Research Officer and two Officers. Each member of the team works on specific areas of expertise to research and develop positions and content for advocacy and communications purposes. The team has regular direct contacts with EU and national policy-makers as part of the advocacy campaigns run by Finance Watch. The Research and Advocacy team works in close collaboration with the entire Finance Watch organisation, including its members.
The role implies a direct contribution to the research work and to the advocacy effort of Finance Watch, both by taking direct responsibility for specific files and by providing support to the rest of the team, if and when relevant. It can also imply acting as a senior spokesperson for the organisation and advocate for its positions under the responsibility of the Head of Research & Advocacy.
The Senior Research and Advocacy Officer will report to the Head of Research and Advocacy.
Job description
The Senior Research and Advocacy Officer:
- Takes responsibility for specific Research and Advocacy files.
- Represents Finance Watch externally with policy-makers, regulators and, when necessary, media on the files she/he is responsible for.
- Contributes to support the Research and Advocacy team, in particular on topics related to financial markets, financial stability and sustainable finance.
- Contributes to a good working relationship with members, in cooperation with the Outreach team, and helps to facilitate discussions around the research and advocacy work.

- Finance Watch is a recognised public interest expert voice on financial system reform thanks to a comprehensive, consistent and high-quality corpus of policy analysis and recommendations, disseminated through a wide and engaged network of regulators, supervisors, policy-makers, elected officials and other expert stakeholders as part of the supervisory and legislative process.
- The Research and Advocacy strategy and objectives of Finance Watch are delivered on time, reported and contribute to the overall mission of the organisation.
- The Research and Advocacy department is well-functioning, with a strong team spirit and fostering strong collaboration with the rest of the organisation.
Profile / Qualifications
- Personal conviction about the relevance of Finance Watch’s mission of “making finance serve society”.
- Significant financial industry experience, including at senior level.
- Inside knowledge of the functioning of finance, and ability to analyse a very diverse range of financial issues, whether related to banking, insurance, financial markets, financial inclusion, asset management, financial stability or sustainable finance.
- Understanding of policy-making processes, financial regulation and financial supervision.
- Demonstrated skill to conduct high level research, write reports and speak in public.
- Understanding of the main issues at stake with financial reforms in Europe, and relevant regional and international mechanisms/institutions.
- Experience in representing an organisation externally, including in international events, would be a plus.
- Ability to manage a varied workload effectively, including managing competing demands, maintain high levels of accuracy and reliability, and ensure excellent coordination of activities.
- Fluent written and spoken English is essential. Fluency in at least another EU language would be a plus.
- Master’s Degree, PhD or equivalent level of education.
