Deadline April 29th 2020 (start date as soon as possible)

Full time position based in Friends of the Earth Europe office, Brussels

Friends of the Earth Europe (FoE Europe) campaigns for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. It unites 32 national organisations with thousands of local groups and is part of the world’s largest grassroots environmental network, Friends of the Earth International, calling for economic, environmental and social justice.

The campaigner will have the great opportunity of being part of delivering FoE Europe’s vision and strategy of a socially fair energy transformation, alongside other members of the FoE Europe climate justice and energy team.

In particular this post will focus on FoE Europe’s work to increase political ambition on energy savings in Europe. Our current energy system is deeply wasteful, which holds back the transition to a fossil-free world. Reducing our energy consumption is the fastest way to cut CO2 emissions and reduce energy bills for the millions of Europeans living in energy poverty.

FoE Europe has been a leading organisation in the campaign to increase energy savings efforts in Europe by supporting the case for massive renovation programs across the continent while making the crucial link with energy poverty and is coordinating the European-wide Right to Energy coalition.

FoE Europe campaigns on energy savings through movement building efforts with trade union and social justice allies, grassroots groups all over Europe, and in coordination with our European member groups.

This post is expected to support and expand this continuing campaign.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop FoE Europe’s policies, expertise and campaign strategies on energy savings and energy poverty;
  • Support and strengthen the European movement for a socially fair energy transformation including supporting FoE Europe member groups, social justice allies and grassroots groups engaging in energy saving and energy poverty alleviation efforts;
  • Develop and implement campaign activities, in close collaboration with other members of the climate justice and energy team, towards FoE Europe’s goal of a socially fair energy transformation;
  • Coordinate activities and strategies with key allies and alliances such as the Right to Energy coalition;
  • Carry out and deliver annual planning, budgeting, and fundraising;
  • Produce press releases and diverse online (social media) and offline communication materials like briefings, reports, studies, blog articles, infographics, videos, and op-eds, in close collaboration with communications colleagues;
  • Use social media effectively and creatively;
  • Represent FoE Europe externally, including to the media and at external events;
  • Maintain an overview of the key relevant research, events and policy developments;
  • Report to and advise the coordinator of the Climate Justice and Energy team on the campaign;
  • Contribute to development of strategy and tactics of the Climate Justice and Energy program beyond the specific work on energy savings and energy poverty.

Essential requirements:

  • A strong commitment to the values, vision and mission of Friends of the Earth Europe;
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in working with an NGO at EU or international level, including advocacy work and campaigning on energy and/or climate issues;
  • Experience campaigning on energy savings and efficiency or energy poverty is an advantage;
  • Experience in managing campaigns including the various responsibilities involved (such as fundraising, research, planning, lobbying, communications);
  • Experience in dealing with stakeholders from different backgrounds: such as decision-makers at high and working-level, MEPs, NGOs, grassroots groups, social justice organisations and trade unions, FoEE member groups, activists, lobbyists, researchers, media, etc.;
  • Experience in project management including proven ability to effectively adjust plans to rapidly changing circumstances;
  • Good understanding of European energy and/or climate policy;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Motivation to exchange with and learn from colleagues;
  • Ability to think out of the box and find creative ways to campaign;
  • Ability to attend occasional evening/weekend meetings and undertake travel, mainly within Europe.

This full-time position is based in Brussels in the FoEE office. The campaigner will report to and be task managed by the coordinator of the Climate Justice and Energy programme.
