Young Friends of the Earth Europe is seeking a Project Coordinator.

Young Friends of the Earth Europe (YFoEE) is a grassroots network of young people and youth organisations working collectively for social and environmental justice on a local, national and European level. We organise events and inspire young people to take action on issues ranging from climate change, food and agriculture and education for sustainability – to ensure the voices of young people are heard in Europe and beyond. Purpose of the role:

To manage a YFoEE Erasmus+ funded project, “Intersectional Convergence of European Youth towards Green New Deal” (ICEY-GND) related to European youth’s work on Green Deal in 2020 - 2021. In particular, this will mean the coordination of partners in charge of various work packages across ten countries and particularly responsible for two work packages.

ICEY-GND aims to provide a platform for more inclusive democratic and civic youth engagement in multi-levelled decision-making for the development and implementation of policies that will shape our future, in particular the European Green Deal and similar policies, both at the European and national levels. We aim to engage under-represented youth across the board in a more structured intersectional cooperation for collective visioning and joint plans and actions towards a socially just and environmentally sound future.

A joint platform will be employed by young people to develop practical steps to democratise our commons and set up the contours of national and European-wide Green New Deal(s).

Key responsibilities:

  • Project management of ICEY-GND, ensuring all work packages and partners remain on track whilst delivering on expected project results;
  • Specifically, this includes:
    • Supporting in sub-granting to partners;
    • Leading on communications between project partners and setting up regular project consortium online meetings every three months;
    • Monitoring of implementation of work packages;
    • Liaising with the funder, including face-to-face meetings and electronic communication;
    • Responsibility for reporting to the funder and implementing monitoring and evaluation procedures;
    • Coordination of European-level dissemination and communication activities;
    • Collecting achieved results and outputs from each partner group and work package coordinators every six months through an online reporting system; as well as reports and participants’ evaluations from transnational activities;
    • Making sure that YFoEE meets all funder requirements as specified in the contract with the donor.
  • Being in charge of the following activities within the project:
    • Facilitating and supporting the work of the YFoEE Working Group on Green Deal, which will be the project’s main decision-making body;
    • Leading on content development, delivery and evaluation of the project events such as innovative and appealing trainings that will attract young people across Europe (for example on Innovative Communications Strategies and Outreach and Public Interest);
    • Collecting and disseminating tutorials (e.g. Tutorials on Collecting Visions) and toolkits containing methodologies, exercises and worksheets collected during the trainings;
    • Organising scheduled project events such as European gatherings on climate and social justice in Spain and Belgium;
    • Supporting project partners and their communication efforts, by following their local and national campaigning and drafting engaging written/visual content for the YFoEE website and social media;
    • Helping with media outreach, press releases, and assisting with any communications required in reaching out to the European and international decision makers during the UNFCCC COP 26 in Scotland; coordinating activities and preparations prior to and during the event;
    • Coordinating a multilingual launch of the New Green Deal for Europe created during this project, including publishing materials and short videos on the project website;
    • Providing adequate support to volunteers involved in the project.
  • Seek price quotes from consultants to deliver trainings and materials;
  • Coordinate with hosting partner organisations and voluntary Young FoEE steering and communications working groups;
  • Promote YFoEE’s identity and values through our external communications;
  • Work closely with communication volunteers of YFoEE to create online content and support their needs.

Essential requirements:

  • Commitment to the visions, missions and values of YFoEE and FoE Europe, and a personal commitment to environmental and social justice;
  • Relevant communications experience, ideally in a network-based organisation;
  • An excellent level of English (other languages are an advantage);
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Strong writing skills;
  • Ability to work in a team, supporting a range of individuals, and balancing leadership and service in relation to voluntary youth groups;
  • Experience of democratic, participative and consensus-based working methods;
  • Experience in engaging workshop facilitation and knowledge of non-formal educational methods;
  • Project management experience, preferably of EU-funded projects;
  • Ability to advocate for a youth perspective;
  • Prepared to work occasional evenings and weekends and to travel abroad;
  • Ability to multitask, set priorities, self-motivate and manage time efficiently;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.

Desirable

  • Previous experience with Young Friends of the Earth, Friends of the Earth or an environmental or social justice group/organisation/movement;
  • Knowledge of EU institutions;
  • Knowledge of working with basic visual design tools, such as Canva.

The position is based in Brussels (part time, 80%) in the FoEE office.

The salary range is expected between Euro 2.113 and 2.300 gross per month (for an 80% position), depending on experience. FoEE offers an attractive benefits package, including a 13th month salary, lunch vouchers (Eur 8,- per worked day), an additional 5 days of holidays per year, pension scheme, hospitalisation and comprehensive travel insurance. We also offer full coverage of train travel in case of commuting within Belgium.
