About the team/job

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is looking for a temporary Communications Officer to join its External Relations Team to cover for a period of maternity leave. Our small team works closely with leadership, staff across the wider EMBL and international collaborators to deliver high-quality, engaging content about our data resources and bioinformatics research through a variety of digital and traditional communications channels.

Your role

We are looking for a sociable person with strong writing skills, who is comfortable working in a digital environment. Your love of writing, outgoing personality and natural ability to connect with scientists, engineers, developers and media professionals will be invaluable in communicating complex science to the public and funders. Crucially, your flexibility will help you adapt to shifting priorities in a busy office, where no two days are alike. Because we are a small team, you will have the opportunity to get involved in a broad range of projects covering communications, branding, events and public engagement.

You have

The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level, but more importantly will be able to demonstrate curiosity about and enthusiasm for science and technology. Alongside strong writing and editing skills, you should also have a good understanding of digital communications channels and tools. You should also have experience with media distribution and media monitoring tools. We are looking for someone who is well-organised, a self-starter with excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritise.

You might also have

Experience working internationally would also be desirable, though not required.

Why join us

At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of big data in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. The institute nurtures a friendly, collegial and supportive atmosphere. We offer a competitive salary, an informal culture, professional development, gym, café and library, and a subsidised bus service to Cambridge and nearby Saffron Walden. As part of EMBL we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 27 member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and recruit internationally. Our 800+ staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals representing over 70 nationalities. EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.

What else you need to know

Please apply online through www.embl.org/jobs. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to supply examples of your work and to complete a short practical test. EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. Special visa requirements apply to employees from non-EU countries working at EMBL-EBI in the UK. The period of work does not qualify such individuals for the Highly Skilled Migrants Programme.
