AGE Platform Europe is looking for a Secretary General Full time/permanent.

AGE Platform Europe a.i.s.b.l. (AGE) is a European network of 110 organisations of and for people aged 50+ which aims to promote and protect the rights of senior citizens in the European Union (EU), and to voice their concerns in relevant EU, United Nations and Council of Europe policy debates among others. AGE Secretary General will retire end of June 2020. To replace her we are looking for an experienced team leader to oversee the management of our Brussels-based secretariat, to ensure a smooth implementation of our ambitious work programmes and to represent AGE externally.

The Secretary General will be responsible for leading a team of 15 highly skilled, multilingual and enthusiastic colleagues, with the support of AGE Policy Director, Office Manager and Project Manager. He/She will work in close cooperation with and report to the Executive Committee and Council of Administration.

1. Main Tasks

The Secretary General is responsible for overall management of AGE activities, as stated in the following parts:

  • Human resources: Overall management of AGE staff;
  • Administration and finance: Overall administrative, financial and legal arrangements made for AGE, in cooperation with the Office Manager;
  • External relations: Maintaining a high external profile for AGE;
  • AGE membership: Development, involvement and satisfaction of AGE membership and the supervising of organization of AGE statutory meetings;
  • Policy development: Overall responsibility for implementing all AGE policy and campaign work in cooperation with the Policy Director;
  • Information provision: Overseeing the proper implementation of AGE internal and external information/communication strategy;
  • Project work: Overall responsibility for AGE project work in cooperation with AGE Project Manager.

2. Personal qualifications

Applicants should have thorough knowledge of the structures and procedures of the EU institutions, knowledge and experience of NGO structures and culture at EU level as well as of EU non-discrimination and equality framework, social policies and relevant research programmes at EU level.

Thorough knowledge and experience of ageing policies at EU level and substantive knowledge of ageing issues at global level will be considered a major plus.

The skills and abilities required are good communication and problem-solving skills, the ability to work effectively within an organisation with an EU-wide membership, the ability to work and speak publicly effectively in English and French.

The applicant must be experienced in financial and strategic planning and personnel management.

The candidate must be available to work irregular hours and to travel frequently within the EU and occasionally outside the EU.

3. Contract information

  • Permanent contract under Belgian Law;
  • The position holder must work in AGE secretariat located in Brussels;
  • Preferred starting date: May-June 2020;
  • Gross monthly salary will be within the range of salaries for top level staff in Brussels-based EU NGOs.
