Your team

You will be part of the French language unit in the Language Services Division of the Directorate General Communications. Our Division has four sections, each covering a different group of languages, and several horizontal teams, including a Language Technology and Innovation unit. The French unit’s section also comprises the Dutch, German, Italian and Spanish units. We are responsible for providing the ECB with linguistic expertise and support in the official languages of the EU, in close collaboration with the national central banks and the national supervisory authorities.

As part of a small team of French mother-tongue translators, you will be responsible for translating texts from English into French (as well as editing and proofreading texts in French), predominantly from the fields of monetary policy and banking supervision. You will also work closely with colleagues in the other divisions of the Directorate General Communications and contribute to making ECB policies understood by both the general public and expert audiences.

Your role

As a French Translator you will:

• Translate, from English into French, a broad range of texts for different audiences in the fields of monetary policy and banking supervision, revise work by other translators and edit and proofread texts drafted in French, often within a tight deadline;
• Collaborate closely with colleagues in the Directorate General Communications to support the ECB’s communication with the public (e.g. speeches and website and social media content);
• Contribute to the ECB’s database of multilingual terminology related to the European System of Central Banks and the Single Supervisory Mechanism, by researching and compiling terminology and expanding French translation memories;
• Use a broad range of tools (including translation memories and neural machine translation) to help you to work in the most effective way;
• Support the Division’s traineeship programme by mentoring trainee translators;
• Contribute to cross-organisational initiatives on topics of relevance to the Division or to the Directorate General;

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

• A master’s degree or equivalent in translation, linguistics, modern languages or another relevant field (for details on degree equivalences, https://www.ecb.europa.eu/careers/before-you-apply/html/index.en.html;
• In addition to the above, professional experience as a translator working from English into French;
• A native speaker-level (C2) command of French and an advanced (C1) command of English, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, https://www.coe.int/en/web/common-european-framework-reference-languages/table-1-cefr- 3.3-common-reference-levels-global-scale;
• A sound understanding of economics, central banking and/or banking supervision;
• A sound working knowledge of MS Office, such as Word and Outlook.

Desired:

• Experience in drafting or translating impactful content for websites, social media and/or speeches in French;
• An advanced (C1) command of at least one other official language of the EU (preferably German);
• Experience of working in an international environment;
• Experience of translating using computer-assisted translation tools such as SDL Studio.
