About the team/job

We are looking for a Grants Officer to join us at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory - European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Genome Campus just outside of Cambridge in the UK.

EMBL-EBI has a successful history in identifying and obtaining external funds to further its research activities. The EMBL-EBI Grants Office typically supports over 160 applications for external funding per year, and the current external grant income to EMBL-EBI is in excess of €36 million per annum. Major funders include the European Commission, the US National Institutes of Health, UK Research and Innovation councils, Wellcome, and other charitable organisations (e.g., Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Cancer Research UK, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation).

The Grants Office is a close-knit busy team, currently comprising of seven Grants Officers, a Grants Data Officer, Grants Administrator, Contracts Officer, and the Grants Office Supervisor. Your role will be line-managed by the Grants Office Supervisor.

The EMBL-EBI Grants Office is a friendly, highly communicative team. The work is varied, and you will have autonomy to develop and improve processes in a dynamic, international working environment. Travel will be required to our head office in Heidelberg or events and conferences relating to our funders.

Your role

As a Grants Officer, you will provide a professional service on all aspects of the pre- and post-award administration to senior scientists. You will act as a liaison in the management of financial, legal, and grant compliance matters on grant proposals and active grants.

You will need to be confident in conducting organised communication with and between external partners, funding bodies, professional legal, and intellectual property advisors, as well as other members of the EMBL administrative team both at the EMBL-EBI and EMBL-Heidelberg (Germany).

As a Grants Officer, you will successfully identify funding sources, manage relations with research funding bodies, and understand the management of grant compliance and contracts.

You have

As the successful candidate it is likely you will have:

  • Previous grants management experience, ideally gained in a scientific environment;
  • The ability to communicate equally well with scientists, administrators and management;
  • Project management and problem solving skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong interpersonal skills, good communication, and fluency in English are fundamental.

You might also have

  • An understanding of the life sciences is helpful in the understanding of the work you will support, as is an understanding and empathy of an international research environment;
  • Experience in managing budgets and/or relevant legal experience would also be beneficial as the Grants Officer supports both these areas.
