Background

Eurogroup for Animals is the pan-European animal protection association, representing 83 member organisations within the EU and beyond. Together we provide a voice for the billions of animals kept in laboratories, farms and homes or living in the wild. Our vision is to build a Europe that truly cares for animals where the well-being of animals is assured and where they experience a good life.

The purpose of Eurogroup for Animals is to drive positive change for animals by convening its members around common goals, and coordinating EU wide action to jointly influence EU law and policy making. Our advocacy work consists of dedicated programmes and a growing portfolio of projects and campaigns.

Purpose of the role

As the European Commission reviews the acquis relating to animal welfare, with a view to presenting new legislative proposals in 2023, we are looking for a Political Adviser to reinforce our advocacy team. We are looking for a passionate, highly social, skilled colleague with EU level advocacy experience and who has an understanding of animal welfare issues.

Whilst undertaking advocacy activities across all animal welfare issues, the successful candidate will spearhead Eurogroup for Animals’ political engagement to raise the bar for fish welfare during the ongoing legislative review. For more information about our work on fish welfare, please do have a look here.

Key responsibilities

  • Supporting our team in delivering key outcomes throughout the Commission’s legislative review, specifically in relation to the welfare of animals kept and used for commercial purposes, during their transport and slaughter;
  • Conducting research, exploring regulatory avenues, and drafting lobby strategies and briefs;
  • Working with institutional stakeholders in the European Commission, European Parliament and Council to build alliances around our advocacy objectives;
  • Produce advocacy arguments to shape key debates on animal welfare, notably on fish welfare;
  • Involving and engaging Eurogroup for Animals’ community of members to maximise pressure on institutional stakeholders;
  • Providing the organisation, its members and institutional stakeholders with scientific advice and tailored policy solutions, whilst engineering and exploiting innovative opportunities to further our goals wherever possible.

Person specification

  • At least 3-5 years experience in EU level advocacy, either in-house or in a consultancy;
  • In-depth knowledge of EU policy making processes;
  • Well-organised and focused on concrete results and deliverables;
  • Personal commitment to animal protection;
  • Analytical skills;
  • Strategic thinking;
  • Flexible and pragmatic;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Fluency in English (any other languages are an advantage);
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely;
  • A proven track record of delivering desired outcomes;
  • Good ability to work as a team member and independently.
