We are looking for a dynamic and digital savvy Communications Officer with commitment and capacity to contribute to the communications goals of BirdLife in Europe and Central Asia.

BirdLife Europe and Central Asia is the European and Central Asian Division of BirdLife International, and is one of the six regional offices of BirdLife International, a global Partnership of autonomous, national non-governmental conservation organisations, with a large grassroots membership in more than 115 countries and territories.

BirdLife’s mission is to conserve birds, their habitats and global biodiversity.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Communications Officer will take the lead on our digital and social media work, as well as work closely with the rest of the team to support them on digital elements of their work.

The person will manage BirdLife Europe & Central Asia’s websites, platforms, and social media channels. They will also have strong graphic design skills which will be used to create images and videos and also to create publications inhouse with pre-existing templates.

This person will also take the lead on certain work areas, as the designated communication officer working alongside policy and conservation colleagues.

With excellent writing, copyediting and proofreading skills and sound technical ability, they will create high quality written and multimedia content.

MAIN DUTIES

Campaigning Duties:

  • Be the designated communication officer on specific work areas to support policy and conservation work;
  • Contribute to the development and drafting of communication plans and advocacy strategies;
  • Provide communication support to our national Partners.

Digital Duties:

  • Develop and implement BirdLife Europe’s social media and digital campaigning strategy and initiatives;
  • Actively manage social media channels, as well as identify new trends and platforms;
  • Collect and analyse data from all websites and social media channels;
  • Help build digital campaign tools and actions.

Graphic Design Duties:

  • Maintain awareness of and familiarity with the latest tools and trends;
  • Plan, design, produce and edit creative multimedia communications materials such as layouts, images, videos, montages and other graphics (using tools like Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign).

REQUIRED PROFILE

The candidate will be a positive, outgoing, creative person who enjoys working with different people, from different backgrounds, who ideally has a:

  • University degree in communications, journalism, marketing or other relevant discipline;
  • Minimum C1 level in English (additional languages are an asset);
  • Experience working in digital communications and/or marketing with demonstrated success, preferably in the not-for-profit sector;
  • Graphic design skills (must be comfortable with Adobe creative suite);
  • Demonstrable passion and interest in nature conservation;
  • Proven ability to write and deliver creative communications and campaigns;
  • Strong track record of effectively using and developing a presence on key social media platforms;
  • Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to understand complex policy and scientific issues and to articulate these in a simple, catchy way;
  • Communications flair with the ability to think creatively, spot a good story and communicate this in the most interesting and/or effective way.

Duration: 1 year Belgian contract (potential of renewal)
Working hours: full-time
