E3G is looking for an experienced and outcome-focused team player to shape European politics to accelerate the EU’s deep, whole-economy transition to climate neutrality. This position is programmed for one year in the context of a maternity cover.

Context and overview of the role.

E3G is a European think tank working globally to accelerate the transition to a climate-safe world. We build the broad-based coalitions needed to deliver change. We pride ourselves on bringing independence to an often-polarised discussion and holding policy makers to account on their promises. E3G is consistently ranked as one of the top-ten most influential environmental think tanks in the world by the University of Pennsylvania’s Global Go To Think Tank Index.

E3G values diversity and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified candidates regardless of age, gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion or ethnic background.

A transformation to a global climate neutral economy must happen by mid-century if we are to avoid dangerous climate change. The EU will be a major venue for making progress in the coming years, including through the European Green Deal. E3G works to make this transformation a reality. This includes creating the political conditions to agree and implement the necessary reforms for a deep, whole-economy transformation of the Union and the necessary reforms to energy, climate, finance, trade, foreign policy and more.

The successful candidate will contribute to political analysis, thought leadership, coordination, and stakeholder engagement. The candidate will join a rich and dynamic team, reporting to the head of EU politics, working in close collaboration with the wider Brussels and EU teams. This role is programmed for one year to coincide with E3G Brussels’ director’s maternity leave. This role will serve in some ways as ‘chief-of-staff’ to E3G’s Head of EU politics who will assume additional responsibilities during that time. There will be a possibility to extend the contract with a similar but adapted focus following this, depending on the availability of funding.

This will include:

  • Editing and bringing consistency in quality, tone, message, and strategy, between all E3G output focused on shaping EU-level politics or policy.
  • Supporting the organisation of E3G’s EU cluster – the internal coordination structure for teams working on the EU – building on E3G’s sectoral expertise and work to shape broader European decarbonisation politics.
  • Provides coordination capacity across E3G on EU-level legislative processes, notably ‘Fit for 55’ and other European Green Deal legislation.
  • Representing E3G in coalitions and fora connecting different sectors and issues.
  • Writing broad horizontal and political outputs to shape broader politics around EU-level legislative processes.
  • Supporting E3G’s EU climate governance work, engaging with the wider climate governance community, providing insights, and delivery capacity.
  • Potentially support the head of EU politics in fundraising and funders management.

Person description:

  • You are intellectual curious, outcome-focused, a supportive team player, and good under pressure.
  • You are an “EU insider” with relevant experience in EU-level politics and policy-making as part of institutions, governments, or stakeholders. As such, you have an excellent grasp of EU politics, policy-making processes, and the European Green Deal, grounded by a few years of professional experience.
  • You have excellent writing and editing skills in English, and the ability to draw out a clear and compelling story on complex issues.
  • You are confident engaging stakeholders in government, industry, finance and civil society, at all levels of seniority.
