The International Trademark Association (INTA) is looking for a Policy Officer- Europe to join our dynamic Europe Office team in Brussels! If you want to combine technical expertise in intellectual property and advocacy work in a multicultural and forward-thinking environment, this is for you!

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Working in the Europe Representative Office with INTA’s Europe team, relevant departments of the New York Headquarters, and other INTA Representative Offices, the Policy Officer, Europe Office contributes to the representation and advocacy of the Association’s policies on trademarks and complementary intellectual property (IP), with emphasis on advocacy at EU and national levels across Europe and acts as staff liaison for several INTA advocacy committees. Responsibilities also include support when needed on communications, events as well as membership retention & acquisition-related objectives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Government Relations Duties - EU level: Offers direction and support in the implementation of INTA’s advocacy objectives in Brussels on policy issues of relevance to the Association":
  • Monitors, analyzes, and reports on relevant policy developments at EU level, and identify opportunities for INTA to influence these developments;
  • Coordinates with the relevant staff liaisons and subcommittees, taskforces and/or members to develop appropriate and timely responses - as required;
  • Attends events of the EU Institutions and other relevant events;
  • Organizes and attends meetings with relevant officials as necessary;
  • Develops and updates databases of key government officials and stakeholders for lobbying purposes and INTA’s management of relationships with officials;
  • Drafts articles for INTA’s newsletter the Bulletin concerning assigned topics; suggests posts and videos on assigned topics for INTA’s presence on social media;
  • Responds to substantive and routine inquiries from members of the Association and the public.
  1. Government Relations Duties - national level: Offers direction and support in the implementation of INTA’s advocacy strategies at national level (Europe and Central Asia) on policy issues of relevance to the Association:
  • Reviews and analyzes proposed national legislation and regulations that may be of interest to the Association and refers such matters to the appropriate INTA committees and/or subcommittees for consideration;
  • Works with relevant INTA staff liaisons and Advocacy Committees, taskforces and/or members, to develop and draft appropriate and timely responses, as required, including comments/submissions on consultations, IP offices’ practices and legislative initiatives;
  • Researches and assists in drafting position papers, testimony, reports, speeches and correspondence that relate to assigned topics;
  • Identifies and develops government relations opportunities for the Association. Contacts national government agencies for information on schedules, status of various pieces of legislative measures and proposed rules, key staff, etc.;
  • Contributes to INTA’s enhanced relationship with regional and national IP offices across Europe and helps positioning INTA as a trustworthy and essential partner;
  • Organizes and attends meetings in countries with relevant officials as necessary;
  • Interacts with private sector organizations with similar goals on the national level;
  • Develops and updates databases of key national government officials for advocacy purposes and INTA’s management of relationships with officials;
  • Drafts articles for INTA’s newsletter the Bulletin concerning assigned topics; suggests posts and videos on assigned topics for INTA’s presence on social media;
  • Responds to substantive and routine inquiries from members of the Association and the public.
  1. Committee liaison duties: Supports and manages various INTA Advocacy Committees as assigned, as full Staff Liaison, working closely with the Chief Policy Officer and Chief Representative Officer-Europe, and ensures that these committees reach their objectives in line with INTA Strategic Plan;
  2. Membership, Events, Marketing and Communications:
  • Provides support to the Europe Office Team on reaching objectives related to membership, events, marketing and communications as required;
  • Is flexible to contribute to other duties as assigned. POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Only candidates with the following must-have requirements will be considered:

  • An experience in intellectual property;
  • Completed law studies at university-level or professional legal qualification or equivalent;
  • Practical knowledge of the functioning of the European Institutions and their decision-making processes;
  • Fluency in English with excellent communication and drafting skills.

Other requirements include:

  • Three-to-five-year experience a plus;
  • Excellent language skills in other European languages desirable;
  • Advanced IT user skills (Microsoft Office, Outlook);
  • Ability to multitask and work proactively and independently, as part of the small dynamic Brussels team, with New York based staff liaisons and INTA’s international volunteers;
  • A strong sense of integrity, flexibility, and responsibility;
  • Robust interpersonal skills and cultural awareness;
  • Ability to research, analyze, negotiate and to establish and maintain relationships with officials and relevant stakeholders;
  • Some travel required (when safe/possible) - primarily within Europe but also to INTA’s New.

York headquarters and international meetings.
