About us

The mission of Zero Waste Europe (ZWE) is to empower communities in order to redesign our relationship with resources. We campaign for zero waste strategies in Europe and beyond, and support local groups and change agents who have the potential to drive change in their region. Currently, ZWE is the only pan-European organisation specialising in waste issues from prevention to disposal and on local, national, and European levels. ZWE is the European chapter of the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA).

ZWE is an independent, nonprofit association created in late 2013 in the Netherlands aiming to:

  • Promote zero waste strategies in Europe and elsewhere;
  • Act as a catalyst for European good practices in the field of circular economy, waste and resources;
  • Empower local groups to develop community-based strategies for the prevention, reduction, separation, recycling, and composting of waste;
  • Promote a responsible treatment of waste and prevention of non-sustainable solutions such as landfilling and incineration;
  • Increase awareness about the health effects of the current economy of waste disposal, and promote non-toxic alternatives;
  • Promote environmental and social justice.

We are a successful and fast-growing NGO where personal development, fairness and inclusiveness are high on the agenda.

About you

You are a born problem-solver and strategic thinker, always looking to make people’s life easier. You enjoy leading on organisational processes, designing and implementing what’s needed for a smooth functioning of organisations. You excel at personal relations, are organised and attentive to details. You are proactive, flexible and embrace complexity. You can handle stress and uncertainty and you are familiar with the zero waste philosophy.

You have experience in running a mid-sized organisation, including: managing human resources in several countries and talent acquisition; strategic oversight of finance and budgeting; statutory matters and risk management. You have a serious track record of leading organisational growth transition plans, from defining and setting up new legal structures to designing new working practices while minimising risks.

About the role

Due to the continuous growth of ZWE, a new Operations Director position has been created.

The Operations Director will join a dynamic team of 20 people. They will closely coordinate with the Executive Director and the Associate Director as part of the Management Team, and work closely with other senior staff. The Operations Director will be supported by a team of 3 people (Finance, Grant Management and Admin).

This is a key leadership role within the organisation with the exciting objective of being responsible to develop and foster policies and systems for HR, finances, and administration, but also leading on ZWE future development plans in terms of legal, financial and operational implications.
