The Green European Foundation (GEF) is a European level political foundation funded by the European Parliament. GEF is affiliated to the European Green Party and active in political education projects on European issues. Our mission is to encourage European citizens to participate in European political discussions. The Green European Journal (GEJ) is Europe’s leading political ecology magazine. The Journal stands for an open, sustainable, social and feminist Europe. In print and online, it publishes quality articles which track political currents and ideas offering fresh perspectives and frontline analysis. Editorially independent, it has been published in 21 languages since its foundation in 2012 and collaborates with partners across Europe to connect with new audiences and open up spaces for real debate. About the role of the Editor in chief

The overall mission of the Editor in chief (EiC) is to conceive and develop the GEJ editorial line and its political identity, in close cooperation with the editorial board and the GEJ staff, as a way to enhance and further the quality and reach of the GEJ and strengthen its role as a leading European political ecology magazine.

The EiC is responsible for the overall editorial work of the GEJ as a political magazine, with the support of the editorial staff, ensuring its overall publishing quality as well as the development, expansion and consolidation of its readership but also of its visibility and reputation. The EiC is responsible for the overall outreach and communications strategy of the GEJ, including the management of its network of partner publications and of regular authors, correspondents and other supports.

The EiC is responsible for ensuring a balanced framework and environment of work for the rest of the GEJ staff in terms of the editorial and outreach and communications deliverables.

Main responsibilities and tasks

  • Design and implementation of the overall GEJ strategy
  • Management of the GEJ staff (currently a team of 3 to 5)
  • Conception, production and delivery of GEJ printed editions
  • Coordination, supervision and quality delivery of online journal products
  • Leading and coordination of the Editorial Board
  • General management of Partners’ relations
  • General management of relations with other dimensions of the Foundation’s work
  • Overseeing budget and strategic financial decisions
  • Overseeing main communications streams
  • Representing the GEJ externally

Qualities and experience sought

  • A minimum of 5 to 7 years of relevant professional experience in edition, journalism and/or in a relevant position within a political foundation or similar organisation;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, including in an intercultural environment;
  • Fluency in English and at least one other EU language; any additional language is a precious asset;
  • Good knowledge of the current European debates, EU politics and history;
  • Good knowledge of the political history of the Green movement, its current developments, and its national trajectories at the European level;
  • Capacity to plan strategic developments and to exercise team leadership;
  • Taste for networking, exploring and building partnership with various actors across Europe;
  • Ability to work both independently and in collaborative mode within a team, with a developed sense of accountability;
  • Adherence to GEF’s mission and team values (solidarity, respect, openness, sustainability and autonomy);
  • Willingness to travel, availability for occasional work outside regular office hours.

What we offer

  • A full-time (38h/week) position
  • A salary defined by GEF’s salary scale, taking into account the category of function and prior experience of the candidates (between 4.100 EUR gross monthly for candidates with 5 years’ experience and 4.396 EUR with 12+ years’ experience, subject to Belgian tax and social security)
