Do you want to be part of making sure people and the environment are protected from harmful chemicals? We are hiring a lawyer to be part of the Chemicals Project team. The role will involve analysing complex legal questions and policy scenarios and producing high-quality outputs, including public facing briefings. In particular, the Lawyer will be involved in matters relating to the implementation, enforcement and protection of the EU’s REACH Regulation, the Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation and other laws relevant to chemicals pollution. There will be a strong focus both on carrying out advocacy with decision-makers to secure adoption of ClientEarth’s recommendations, and on providing legal support to other NGOs.

The position will be line-managed by the Chemicals Project Lead lawyer based part time in Brussels and London. The Lawyer will have key relationships with members of the other teams. She/he will work with the Environmental Democracy team working on transparency and access to justice, the Plastics team focusing on plastic pollution, and ClientEarth staff more generally including the communication team and fund raising team.

Role requirements

  • Degree in law or legal professional qualification.
  • Relevant professional experience, preferably in a law firm but relevant experience in an NGO, public authority or academia is also appreciated;
  • A good understanding of EU administrative law and of EU political and legislative processes;
  • Knowledge of EU policies relevant to chemicals and related fields including the EU policy on circular economy;
  • Knowledge of the principles and logic of regulatory risk assessment and management;
  • Fluency in English, with outstanding written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated rigorous legal analysis and drafting skills;
  • Flexibility in switching between numerous and complex tasks;
  • Autonomy in prioritising tasks and adapting to the ever-changing context;
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a small team but also to execute work independently and take the initiative when appropriate;
  • Ability to represent and speak on behalf of ClientEarth at official meetings, stakeholders forum and other relevant public events;
  • Ability to convey to a lay audience complex legal and procedural issues while getting ClientEarth’s core messages through;
  • Commitment to non-profit/public interest advocacy.
