Job Opportunity: Researcher Innovation, Brussels

E3G is looking for a dynamic professional to support its research and advocacy work on the EU’s efforts to promote innovation for a climate-neutral continent by 2050.

Context and role

  • E3G is a leading European think tank working globally to deliver climate safety for 10 billion people. E3G was ranked the 5th most influential environmental think tank by the University of Pennsylvania’s Global Go To Think Tank Index in 2018.
  • At the end of 2019, European leaders have committed the EU to reach climate neutrality by 2050. This requires European policy-makers to adopt an “all hands on deck” approach with all policies contributing to climate neutrality. The European Green Deal signals a more cross-cutting approach to climate action.
  • European Research and Innovation (R&I) policy is one of the EU’s vehicles to collectively push boundaries further and support political ambition with new technologies and social innovation. We need to rapidly scale up the deployment of the technologies available today and increase the readiness of the next generation of breakthrough technologies.
  • E3G is looking to strengthen its existing team in Brussels with someone who will support E3G’s work on the EU innovation framework considering the European Green Deal and the ambition to become climate neutral. You will also support E3G’s work on energy system choices and infrastructure.

Profile & requirements

  • You have very strong written communication skills, excellent English and the ability to adapt your style (written and verbal) to any audience from technical experts, policy-makers or the wider public.
  • You demonstrate a high level of initiative and are positive, organised and able to deliver high-quality work to challenging deadlines. You can quickly familiarise yourself with a new topic through self-led research including conversations with experts, assessing legislation or policy statements, and other data sources. You have an analytical mind and are comfortable with basic, excel-based data analysis.
  • You are a practical, hands-on person who is happy to engage directly with stakeholders at all levels and to manage relationships. Experience of organising meetings, workshops and/or other events is desirable.
  • You have at least one year of professional experience and possibly more.
  • You possess a decent grasp of EU politics and a demonstrable interest in European innovation policies if possible related to delivering the transformation to a climate-neutral continent. Experience of working in or with EU institutions and or directly on EU innovation policies for climate-neutrality would be an advantage.
  • You have an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (required) and post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline (desirable).
  • You are used to operating internationally, with a high degree of cultural sensitivity. You are a good team player and have the skills and resilience required to work internationally across multiple offices and time zones. A good working knowledge of at least one European Union language besides English would be an advantage. E3G is a multi-lingual organisation. At present we particularly welcome Central and Eastern European languages.

A competitive remuneration package will be offered based on qualifications and experience. This position is programmed for one year, with the aim of extending beyond pending fundraising. We want a candidate who could start as soon as possible, therefore an early starting date would be considered an advantage.
