Do you want to make a real difference to the way we travel in the future? Accelerate the shift to electric vehicles? End the use of unsustainable biofuels in? Develop solutions to tackle aviation emissions and decarbonise freight? If you’re interested in answering these questions, and turning your ideas into reality, this may be the job for you. We are looking for a Policy Manager for our UK office to take forward the work on these and other opportunities for more sustainable transport.

Established in 1990, Transport & Environment is Europe's leading NGO campaigning for cleaner transport. T&E has had a UK office for nearly 2 years aspiring to make the UK a leader in innovative initiatives and regulations to drive the shift to clean, zero carbon, sustainable transport. In the UK our work currently focuses on accelerating the shift to electric cars, vans and trucks; shifting from using unsustainable biofuels in vehicles to sustainable fuels in aviation. All focused on the UK achieving its net-zero climate goals and cleaning up its toxic air.

For the new UK Policy Manager no day will be the same. You may be:

  • Analysing and dissecting complex policy issues to develop innovative solutions;
  • Meeting with government officials or Ministers to present the case for better regulations or more investment in zero carbon transport solutions;
  • Working with partners in other NGOs, supportive companies or the public sector to build broad alliances and coalitions for change;
  • Managing research, commissioned from consultants; working with our in-house analyst or Brussels-based policy teams to assemble the evidence to support our work;
  • Preparing briefing papers, reports, presentations and campaign materials;
  • Helping draft press release and responding to media enquiries;
  • Presenting at a conference or online webinars; or
  • Managing or applying for funding from our supporters.

The Policy Manager’s work will be overseen by the UK Director and will be expected to work with a high degree of autonomy. The successful candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum of five years relevant professional experience working on technical issues in the environmental, energy or automotive sector, research institution or similar;
  • A good understanding of the drivers and emissions from transport and solutions;
  • The confidence to think and act with initiative, to engage and influence policy-makers of different stripes, industry representatives and other stakeholders;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and an ability to write fluently, accurately and concisely;
  • Project management experience including strong interpersonal and team-working skills and an ability to deliver to tight deadlines; and
  • A personal commitment to sustainable transport and the aims of Transport & Environment.

This is a full time position based in the UK, and subject to a probation period. T&E UK shares an office in London but working arrangements are flexible.

To apply, please complete an application form (downloadable here) and send a copy of your CV vacancy@transportenvironment.org clearly demonstrating how you meet the essential criteria. The email subject line should state Application for UK Policy Manager.

The closing date for applications is the 1st November. 1st round interviews are scheduled to be held on the week commencing the 9th November online. A final second interview will be held the following week. It is hoped the successful candidate will be available to start early in 2021 subject to their notice period. Early applications are encouraged. Applications from agencies will not be considered.

T&E anticipates a high number of applications and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
